GuluWalk 2009 takes place around the world in just over two weeks - on Saturday Oct. 24, including in many cities across Canada. In Toronto, the walk begins at 1 p.m. at Lawrence Park (Lawrence and Yonge streets) and ends at Queen's Park.
The GuluWalk began with the steps of just two people in Toronto in 2005. It has since grown into a worldwide movement in support of peace, stability and rebuilding in northern Uganda. Last year, more than 75 cities in 16 different countries walked in support of youth programs for the region.
This year, GuluWalk is raising awareness and funds for a new youth cultural centre in Gulu, Uganda -- the heart of a region affected by 23 years of conflict. The facility will include a theatre, training/practice studios, dorms and will be a central hub of activity that will promote locally led approaches to arts, culture, justice and ultimately peace.
Walk with us this year and you may have the chance to visit the region -- two of our 'founding builders' (the first 500 people to raise $500 online) will receive an all-expenses paid trip to northern Uganda.
For information about the walk, the conflict and to sign-up, visit www.guluwalk.com or call the office: 416-686-1533.
Also, Toronto supporters are invited to the opening of a photography exhibit of shots from northern Uganda by Andrea Smith Friday, Oct. 16 at Gallery DK (1332 Queen Street West) from 7 to 10 p.m. GuluWalk and members of the Acholi community will be there to discuss the conflict, IDPs and the future of the region.
