Safe Schools: A Prerequisite for Learning
In order to achieve these objectives, it is essential that all schools provide a safe environment in which students can learn, grow and develop:
The government acknowledges that school safety is a fundamental prerequisite
for student success and academic achievement. Accordingly, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to address the issue of safety in schools, including the establishment of the Safe Schools Action Team in December, 2004 and the investment of $23 million over three years to launch a comprehensive province-wide bullying prevention strategy.
The Safe Schools Action Team
Under the leadership of Liz Sandals, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Government Services, the Safe Schools Action Team has been given the task of reviewing practices, policies, programs and physical environments to ensure that students are safe, and feel safe, in Ontario schools.
The Safe Schools Action Team has undertaken a number of initiatives including the development of comprehensive recommendations to address the issue of bullying in Ontario schools entitled Shaping Safer Schools: A bullying prevention action plan.
