Anti-poverty activist Wendell Fields was the Marxist-Leninist candidate for Hamilton West in the last federal election, but this is the unemployed moulder's first crack at municipal politics.
Fields says the majority of Hamilton citizens had no meaningful input into the supercity concept. "There is a need for people themselves to organize their own people's constituent assembly so they may discuss, plan and implement their own form of government structure."
He also advocates the organization of "people's councils," to ensure that social service programs are not contracted out to big private monopolies for profit.
He stresses the economy must serve the needs of citizens rather than corporate interests. He favours lower taxation for small businesses, and higher taxation for certain major corporations.
"The situation with the downtown core is a direct reflection of the condition of the economy," Fields says.

Wendell Fields suggested neighbourhood groups should organize teams of citizens to do surprise inspections on polluting industries.
Fields, one of four municipal candidates being fielded by Hamilton Against Poverty, focused on his concerns about the have-nots in the community and injected a touch of humour by floating the idea that the city should look at starting its own airline to fly out of Hamilton's airport.
