About Me: Describe what you are doing in the areas of Peace,Environment, Health, Empowerment
I went for a visit to Ghana, West Africa in 2008 and i hadn't been back since i left when i was 9yrs old via England.
I had kept putting the expensive trip off through out the years, my nuclear family was here etc...
When my mother and father retired they moved back and were building a retirement home there, it really only took a tragic twist (my father's passing) to get me to finally go.Tragedy does that.
My two children went with my mother and my sis and her kids and a niece back to Ghana. Two and a half months my kids went to school there and soaked in the African experience and loooooved it.The Food, the language, the TV programs, commercials, music,,a lifelong education that is incalculable in the impact it had on their lives.
I went for two weeks of bliss and reclaiming my home land but..it was bitter sweet. On one hand it was gorgeous and serene and if u were middle class u lived the life that most people in Canada wished they could.Vibrant city life, huge cars, immaculate private schools, gorgeous beaches etc..
Outside of the Gated enclaves were hard working poor, struggling to eat, struggling to sell their wares in the soaring heat, living in shacks.
Dignified in their outlook on life but grim in the perspective for simple comforts. No computers or playgrounds for kids in the remote areas,no ambulance service if anyone could dare to need an emergency, no house toilet, no drinking water unless u travel to a well. No libraries and sometimes when the power cuts off no electricity for days.
I came back convinced that the computers and the items that we throw away on the roadside, books, all sorts of things should be recycled to be given to those who need it the most instead of ending up in a landfill site somewhere.
My mother and i are creating a kind of Adventure Village for children in an area right across from the Botanical gardens in Aburi ,Ghana and sending bikes and all sorts of computers etc..there, we will build a library and learning centre outside of school and work together to make the future a little brighter for the future of kids and not just the "rich" children of the world.
One Small Step at a time.....
